Mandy Gilbert
Founder & CEO
  • READ BIO

The success of Creative Niche is due to Mandy's original vision: to create a successful professional services agency that marries measurable, empirical metrics with something harder to quantify: an intuitive, humanizing approach to matching clients and talent—and a company that gives back to its community. In short, a company that's committed to honesty, integrity and consistently doing the right thing.

The results speak for themselves. Since she founded the agency in 2002, she's built the enterprise into a fast-growing company that inspires passion on the part of her clients, her talent and, most importantly, her staff. And that's just the beginning. Mandy has exciting expansion plans for the agency that involve business services for large enterprises across as well as a services specifically designed for Canadian micro and small businesses.

She relentlessly pursues continuing education: a client of The Strategic Coach for six years, she’s an active member of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (and was accepted by EO/MIT's elite Entrepreneurial Masters Program--she's class of 2012) and the Women Presidents' Organization. She's also a member of the Women's Executive Network, and recently attended the Bell Leadership Institute executive education program.

With seemingly boundless energy, Mandy's as committed to her family as she is to her company. She loves spending time with her husband and two boys as well as cycling, tennis and yoga. In her spare time, Mandy extends the same compassion she brings to her professional work, helping the homeless whenever she can.

Stephen Hodges
President
  • READ BIO

Stephen is a long-time veteran of both Canada's recruiting and graphic industries. When he joined Creative Niche in January of 2006, he brought a wealth of staffing, advertising and design expertise. He'd previously served as an area manager and senior consultant for a global recruitment agency. And how did he end up where he is today? By earning a B.Sc., of course.

"I was never really sure what I wanted to be when I grew up," he laughs. "I'd always been interested in lots of things. After I got my degree, I enrolled for an additional research year but also took several undergraduate classes in design. Once I found design, I knew I was I on the right track."

Stephen began working as graphic designer and was quickly promoted to studio manager and then production manager. "The opportunity to work with senior business people while honing a craft was incredibly gratifying," he says.

"I developed a great foundation for understanding the challenges our customers face. And because I worked for small, entrepreneurial agencies, I was exposed to ins and outs of business development, relationship management, delivering outstanding service--even with limited resources--and hiring key personnel. Of course, I also had to stay on top of innovations and new technologies--a labour of love I practice to this day."

Stephen's enthusiasm for his chosen field carries over to his current role. "Our experience working with many of the most successful employers in the creative industry, be they agency or client-side, has allowed us to bring substantial value to all our constituents, businesses and talent alike. What's more, the experience we have helping organizations optimize work groups and production workflows has been a real asset to other customers grappling with changes they're being asked to make in order to market successfully in the 21st century."

Stephen's still a voracious consumer of information, whether it's about business, design, sports, politics, and yes, even science. He's also an avid vinyl record collector and a guy who's played on the same recreational hockey team for more than 20 years. Still, his biggest passion is his family, including his three children, each of whom, he beams, "thrills me."

Lisa Armstrong
Engagement Manager
  • READ BIO

Lisa joined the agency in September of 2008 after a nine-year stint with a large international firm where she served as a recruitment manager and division director.

A graduate of the University of Western Ontario with a BA in sociology, Lisa brings a creative, collaborative approach to everything she does. Her innate talents for networking and relationship-building complement deft problem-solving skills, all of which translate into impressive results for her clients.

About her job, Lisa says, "I'm proudest when I make a great match that results in a happy client and a happy candidate. I look forward to coming to work every day. My Niche family are some of my favourite people. They're all unique in their own way: funny, talented, passionate, supportive, and always willing to collaborate and lend a hand when needed."

This same positive attitude is reflected in her outlook towards the world at large. Asked what she'd do if she could change one thing about society, she paraphrases Mahatma Gandhi: "Everything you do, every step you take, every sentence you write, every word you speak--or don't speak--counts. Nothing is trivial. The world may be big, but there are no small things. Everything matters."

But some things matter more than others, right, Lisa? When pressed, she admits to two guilty pleasures: dark chocolate and a glass of nice red wine. "They're both healthy, no?" she laughs. Still, nothing compares with the most important thing of all: spending time with her family, "especially my two young boys--my true joys."

Jenny Gilbert
Engagement Manager
  • READ BIO

Jenny joined the Creative Niche team in November of 2007 after working with a Canadian retailer. There, she handled media buying and the planning of major national advertising promotions. Prior to that, on the agency side, Jenny was an account manager for client services with one of Canada's largest fashion retailers.

Jenny has a wealth of education: she earned a French certificate in Marseille, France, studied business marketing at Ryerson University, and learned Web page design and HTML at George Brown College.

And it doesn't stop there: Jenny considers continuing education to be essential to her own career path. She's taken courses in advertising fundamentals with The Association of Canadian Advertisers, and acquired corporate training in project management, group facilitation, public speaking and presentation skills.

When she's not travelling or spending time with her proudest achievements--her two daughters--Jenny spends her free time with a camera in hand or participating in Bikram yoga. She's a published photographer, who counts Annie Lebowitz among her influences.

What else gets Jenny excited? People--and the technologies that connect them.

"I'm a tech junkie," she confesses, "whether we're talking about devices or platforms. I'm fascinated by Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, mobile phones and apps.

"I think the changing landscape of media is super-exciting. There are so many new communications channels we can listen to and be heard through. They bring us closer to shared interest groups around the world."

Debra Sharpe
Vice President of Client Services
  • READ BIO

Although Debra began her career working in corporate environments, the roles she's filled have always incorporated an aspect of creative. For instance, she's been involved in event management as well as in the branding and the design of corporate communications. She also served as a project and account manager for a design agency. It was then, she says, that she discovered being involved with creative was a part of her DNA.

This insight led her join a large global staffing agency that represented graphic designers, print production specialists, Web designers and developers, and account support personnel in 1997. It was there that she discovered her other great strength: an entrepreneurial instinct that could help companies build their businesses of their own.

Debra brought all of this expertise to Creative Niche when she joined in April of 2005. Now, she consistently secures successful placements, due to her strong client relationship skills, eye for finding rare talent, and knack for matching that talent with environments in which they can flourish.

Debra's recruitment philosophy can best be described as "fit placement" rather than "talent placement." At any given time, she has an active roster of talent that she hopes to match with the right opportunity. She's continually on the lookout for undervalued, high-quality candidates who have the potential to be graphics arts and marcom stars of the future.

Debra's also committed to keeping her skills--if you'll pardon the expression--"sharp." Her education didn't end when she graduated with honours in marketing from Seneca College. She continues to attend conferences and seminars on topics like marketing, client development and negotiating.

In her spare time, Debra enjoys cooking, gardening and the peace of her backyard. She draws inspiration from many individuals, including author Robertson Davies and Nova Scotian painter Maud Lewis.

"She was an artist who was able to capture the simplest beauty in her paintings, despite the fact that she suffered from severe physical deformities," Debra explains. "From the one-room cabin she shared with her husband, Maud depicted the beauty that can be found in the simple joy of the everyday. That's something I can definitely relate to."

Adele Wootton
Director of Client Services
  • READ BIO

When she joined Creative Niche in 2004, Adele brought more than 25 years experience in roles that included production manager, studio manager and recruiter for a major staffing agency.

This variety is something Adele thrives on, and one of the things she likes best about her job today.

"Change is the one consistent thing that we can count on," she observes, "This is an exciting time in communications." But while novelty excites her, she's even more gratified by the fact that she's been able to build and maintain mutually successful relationships with clients for more than a decade. "The industry relationships I have are based on trust and mutual respect," she says, with noticeable pride.

That pride shows up in everything she does: a sense of urgency and a palpable sense of excitement about getting just the right match are standard operating procedure for Adele. Her expertise in design, production, above- and below-the-line marketing, account management and client services might make what she does looks easy, but make no mistake: with Adele, the gears are always turning.

Does that mean Adele's no work and no play? Not by a long shot! She has her guilty pleasures (she claims they're "too many too list," but we have it on good authority that they include Popeye's fried chicken and dark chocolate). But, Adele being Adele, she works those indulgences off with disciplined activities like spinning and Pilates. She also draws inspiration from artists like painter Georgia O'Keefe and writers Diana Gabaldon and Anne Rice. She also admits to a weakness for Sting. As she says with a wink, "It not just his music, style, commitment and energy. It's also his 'guitar arms.'"

When she returned to Canada, she joined one of the country's largest IT and engineering staffing firms before joining Creative Niche in May of 2010.

In her personal life, Sharon's always carved out her own path. Her passion for solo travel has taken her to places as far off as India. She's also a self-confessed foodie who loves to try--and try to re-create--exciting new recipes (even those that include carbs and whipped cream--but don't tell anybody).

Sharon's equally passionate about unearthing hard-to-find skills sets that precisely meet the needs of her clients. "The best thing about my job is the feeling I get when making the right match," Sharon says. "When both sides smile, I'm smiling too."

In addition to travelling, reading biographies, and spending time with friends and family, Craig's enjoys exploring Toronto neighbourhoods on foot. Could that be why "good shoes" shows up on his list of guilty pleasures?

When looking at the future of our industry, Craig is excited by how social media has introduced a sense of play into commerce. "The message seems to be, 'If your brand is fun to play with and fits nicely with me in my world, I'll reward you by trying it,'" he says. "If it lives up to its claims, I'll not only demonstrate brand loyalty but I'll be an active brand advocate.

"Conversely," he warns, "I'm just as likely to spread the word about how a brand failed me."

Natalie’s impressive staffing-industry career began at an Ottawa-area employment agency. It was there that she learned the fine art of resume screening, candidate testing, audit compliance and candidate recruitment. Natalie later accepted a position as an office and human resources manager at a Kanata, Ont., engineering firm where she enjoyed responsibilities ranging from managing executive travel arrangements, to handling employee HR queries.

Never one to avoid a difficult challenge, Natalie has a passion for problem solving and helping her colleagues overcome the daily challenges faced by a fast-paced recruitment and workplace management firm such as Creative Niche.  She’s also passionate about career advancement and education, which explains her goal to broaden her existing skills in the payroll and accounting field.

Jayla Mortensen
Experience Coordinator
  • READ BIO

With her innate people skills, irrepressible enthusiasm and a can-do attitude that just won't quit, Jayla's a natural fit at Creative Niche. She came on board in 2007, after pioneering and writing a teen-focused page for the Sarnia, Ontario, daily The Observer.

Jayla's studies in broadcast journalism at Mohawk College gave her a solid grounding in media. She's still fascinated in the ever-changing mediascape, and in how quickly people respond to online videos, tweets and blog posts.

"Marketers have an upper hand," she observes. "Social media can be a wonderful way to source target markets, conduct research and create brand awareness by word of mouth."

In her personal life, Jayla is inspired by artists ranging from Sabrina Ward Harrison to Augusten Burroughs. Ask her about favourite tunes, though, and she's stumped.

"That's a really tough question, because music is one of things I love most in life," she says. "I especially love live music, and music played by friends. Neil Young is another of my favourite musicians--I grew up listening to it. But I also like performers from other eras, like Nina Simone, James Brown and indie rockers The National."

Jayla has the same problem when it comes to food. "My favourite food? That's like asking a mother to pick her favourite child!" she laughs. That said, these days she's leaning towards Korean bibimbap and margaritas. Not necessarily, she points out, at the same time.

Glen Porter
Finance Liaison

Glen joined the agency in March of 2008 to oversee financial transactions and process payroll. In addition to onboarding talent from Canada, the U.S. and abroad, he also provides essential support to our recruitment team by helping facilitate placements.

Glen's the person that Creative Niche professionals talk to about timesheets, payroll and related issues. He's also the go-to person for Creative Niche clients who have questions about invoices. Meanwhile, he stays abreast of ever-changing employment regulations and HR best practices. It's this knowledge that's allowed him to help us craft specialized workflow processes for offsite teams.

Glen brings a wide variety of work experience to his current role. Among other things, he's been a customer service representative for a financial company, a fabricator and a cook. A self-confessed "polymath in training," Glen has a BA in psychology from the University of Waterloo that's been supplemented by, he claims, "the Jedi teachings of Star Wars, Episodes IV through VI."

Is it this background that's made Glen so even-keeled in approach to his job? In part, but he's also inspired about the people he works with. "The positive energy, sense of forward momentum and teamwork, and generosity on the part of my co-workers and associates make coming into work a truly enjoyable experience," he says.

When he's not at the agency, you might find Glen at live shows by bands as diverse as Arcade Fire, Primal Scream and Black Sabbath. You're equally as likely to find him brain-deep reading writers like Hunter S. Thompson ("he lived an extraordinary life on his own terms"), at a repertory film theatre or, if it's fall, standing in line for a TIFF screening.
